No doubt that Fall is such a gorgeus season and for many landscape and nature photographers this is the best time of the year to capture special and memorable images.
The changing colors of the leaves, the crispness in the air, that peaceful time before the big bad winter season... all these feelings are well described in a short John Burroughs quote: "How beautiful the leaves grow old. How full of light and color are their last days...".
That's exactly what I mean while editing my pictures... 🍁✨
This Autumn Lightroom editing tutorial will show you the easiest and fastest way to add that autumn effect in your images while editing "on the go", only using your mobile.
NOTE: For desktop users in my previous post tutorial you will find How to get the perfect autumn look in your photos with Lightroom CC.
Here are the before and after photos. The end result is a photo that has much more life as compared to the dull and flat photo that we started with. 🤩🤩
Step 1: Basic Adjustments
Ok, first of all: let's start with some basic adjustments on the sample photo.
Exposure +0,84, contrast +15, highlights -52, shadows +64, whites +21, blacks -44.
Please, consider that the basic adjustment settings you use on your photo may vary from what I’ve done here because any photos may be very different from one another. So, you should try different settings until you are happy with the initial results.
Step 2: Adjust the Colors in HSL panel
Much of that Autumn look we are looking for happens to properly using the HSL panel to manipulate the hue and saturation of the oranges, the yellows and the greens. The secret is shifting the greens to yellows, the yellows to oranges, and the oranges to reds.
Here you are my best settings:
ORANGE: hue -27, saturation 0, luminance -24
YELLOW: hue -16, saturation +5, luminance 0
GREEN: hue -13, saturation +16, luminance 0
Well done, you’re there! This is what our photo looks like now, after making just those simple edits to the HSL panel…
Next, we may want to boost the Autumn effect by increasing Temeratrure (+19), Tint (+12), Saturation (+13), and lowering the Vibrance (-32) like this:
Step 3: the Final Touch
The last adjustments I’ll make to this image is giving a small boost to the contrast by increseang Clarity (+24) and Dehaze (+13). That is good for landscape photos, but not for portraits. In this case if you need more contrast better change only the Texture.
An easy way of adding an artistic effect is using also vignetting. It emphasises the centre of your image. You can play around with these settings to create the vignette that best compliments your scene.
Step 4: Create a Preset
After you made the edits, you may want to save your work as a preset so that you can quickly apply it to other photos!
Click on the three dots inside a circle (...) in the upper right-hand corner of the screen, choose “Create Preset” from the menu that appears, and then give your preset a name.
